“I lived and died a proud American.” John Sidney McCain III was an American politician and a naval fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. He served as a United States Senator for the state of Arizona and ran for president twice back in 2000 and 2008. McCain was remembered by many as he passed on August 25, 2018, four days before his 82th birthday.

McCain was the son of  a decorative Naval admiral. McCain was born on August 29, 1936. He followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy in June of 1954 and served in the U.S. Navy until 1981. You could just say he had Naval blood. He was dispatched to Vietnam, and was tortured as a prisoner of war for five years, in 1967 through 1973. His plane was shot down during a combat mission over Vietnam in 1967. During his 5 years in captivity, he spent 2 years in solitary confinement and was subjected to frequent beating and torture that left a permanent disability. For his bravery in the war, he earned three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, two Legion of Merit awards, a Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and elected to the United States Senate in 1986. He was the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 2008 election when ran against former President Obama. McCain lost to Obama 53% to 46%. He served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services.

McCain died of an aggressive brain tumor that was found during a surgery in 2017 to remove a blood clot behind his left eye. Two weeks later he returned to Washington and went against the Republicans’ efforts to repeal Obama’s healthcare plan. Afterwards, McCain spent his time in Arizona undergoing treatment and resting. John McCain was remembered as a hero as he passed on August 29, 2018.
